Patient Stories: Lezina

Lezina

Lezina fell pregnant at just 16 after getting married to her first husband. Originally from Mozambique, Lezina has never been to school as her parents could not afford it.

When Lezina went into labour she was quickly rushed to the nearby health centre, where she stayed in labour for 3 days before being referred to another hospital. Lezina gave birth but unfortunately her baby had died. She was discharged a few days later.

After she was discharged from the hospital she later noticed she was leaking urine. Lezina went back to the health centre but they were not able to help her.  Lezina’s husband left her and she was left to suffer for 3 years.

Lezina remarried and they had a beautiful baby boy together. In 2022 one of our patient ambassadors visited her at her home and they spoke about our fistula care centre and the healing available. Lezina came the same year and had a successful fistula surgery. We recently caught up with Lezina who is thriving.

During her time at the centre she took part in our arts and crafts classes, numeracy and literacy classes and cooking classes. She was happy to find other women like her and made lots of friends.

As part of our micro-enterprise initiative, on discharge Lezina received a solar charging station. She charges phones for a fee and as the solar kit also comes with 4 bulbs she is able to light her home. To date (Dec 2023) Lezina has made MK 91,000. On an average day she makes MK 1,000. She charges MK 100 per phone. Most of the money she has earned has been used to support her families daily needs and she has been able to save up MK21,000. Lezina plans to buy a bicycle and maize.

“I’m grateful I am cured and I received a solar business unit to support myself financially.”
