The Embassy of Iceland in Lilongwe visits Fistula Care Centre

We were delighted to welcome representatives from Embassy of Iceland in Lilongwe, UNFPA and Ministry of Health yesterday.

In a statement the Embassy of Iceland in Lilongwe said:

“Yesterday, staff from the Embassy of Iceland, together with Osk Sturlodottir, Team Lead for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iceland, met with representatives from UNFPA, the Ministry of Health and the Freedom From Fistula Foundation. These meetings marked the beginning of Osk’s visit to Malawi, during which she is reviewing Iceland’s support to SRHR initiatives.

As part of the visit, the group toured the Bwaila Fistula Care Centre, operated by the Freedom From Fistula Foundation and located on the grounds of Bwaila Hospital. Since opening in 2012, the Centre has provided essential care to women living with obstetric fistula. With 35 beds and a dedicated operating theatre, it has the capacity to treat more than 400 women annually. Many patients are identified through a network of fistula ambassadors and community sensitisation activities, ensuring that women and girls across Malawi are able to access care.

Iceland supports the Freedom From Fistula Foundation through the project ‘Bridging Hope: Empowering Women with Obstetric Fistula in Nkhotakota’, implemented by UNFPA. The initiative aims to improve access to high-quality obstetric fistula care and support the reintegration and empowerment of survivors in Nkhotakota, one of Iceland’s partner districts in Malawi. Since the project began, dozens of women from Nkhhotakota have been referred to the Bwaila Fistula Care Centre to receive life-changing treatment and support for returning to their communities.”
