Brigitte
2025
My name is Brigitte. I am 34 years old and live in Vatomandry, 186km from Tamatave. For nearly half my life, 16 years, fistula shaped my existence, trapping me in pain and isolation.
It all began the day I went into labour with my first and only child. The contractions lasted 3 long days. The traditional birth attendant tried everything but failed. We rushed to the nearest hospital, but by the time we arrived, my baby had already died. The doctors removed the body, but two weeks later, I started leaking urine uncontrollably. That is when I realised I had developed a fistula.
My husband left me. I returned to my parents, but even there, I could not escape the shame. I isolated myself and avoided gatherings. I had lost hope, especially after a failed surgery.
Then, I heard about Roger, a patient ambassador who now helps women like me. I dared to hope again. He arranged my journey to the Fistula Care Centre.
There, I was no longer just a patient. I was a human being. The respect, kindness and care I received were life-changing. Dr Breen and the team gave me back my dignity.
Today, I am healed. I am free. I live without shame. I am deeply grateful to Dr Breen and the entire Fistula Care Centre team. Because of them, I have my life back.
