Nairobi, Kenya
The Freedom From Fistula Foundation in Kenya has two fistula projects based in Nairobi.
Our successful hotline number covers both projects and allows potential patients to be assessed over the phone and scheduled for surgery. We provide patients with bus fares to Nairobi via SMS, if required, and oversee their transport home.
Jamaa Hospital We partner with Jamaa Hospital, a mission hospital, in the Eastlands district of Nairobi where we have the capacity to provide free repairs to almost 500 women and girls every year. Our youngest patient so far has been 16 years old and another patient suffered with obstetric fistula for 30 years. This partnership has been a huge success and we are committed to helping as many women as possible in this hospital.
Kenyatta Hospital
We are partnering with Nairobi’s largest hospital and AMREF (African Medical Research Foundation) to renovate an old family planning clinic into a fistula unit which should be operational by the end of 2010.
In the meantime, we are supporting a fistula surgeon who is already in place and are assisting with ‘fistula camps’ to provide immediate care to the women of Kenya. The first camp took place in August 2010 and was a huge success with more than 120 women receiving free surgeries. We also have a new venture in Eldoret where we will be providing up to 300 free surgeries every year.
