£100 can change a woman’s life forever
JFK Hospital Monrovia, Liberia
Ann Gloag (Founder of Freedom From Fistula Foundation) is personally funding the reconstruction of two floors of a wing at the JFK Hospital in Monrovia which was devastated during the country’s civil war.
Once up and running, the hospital wing will have a dedicated ward for obstetric fistula patients and Ann Gloag is working with President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf of Liberia to ensure local doctors are trained and available to provide the surgeries.
Construction started at the end of April and with the majority of work completed, the dedicated fistula ward is on track to open early in 2009. Up until now, free fistula surgeries have been provided on board the Mercy Ship, Africa Mercy, which is one of our partner charities and they will continue doing so until the ship leaves Liberia mid-December, when some of the people and equipment will transfer to the JFK fistula ward.
The Freedom From Fistula Foundation will support the work of the JFK Hospital fistula programme by funding surgeries and training programmes, as well as providing equipment and supplies.
